94th Legislative Session, Week 15

Legislative Activity Resumes Post-Recess

Following the Passover and Easter recess, the Minnesota Legislature reconvened on April 21. Lawmakers are now racing to finalize budget bills ahead of the May 19 adjournment deadline. These bills do not just allocate funding—they reflect the state's priorities.

One key bill to watch is Senate File 2669, the Health and Human Services Omnibus bill. The next hearing for this important legislation is scheduled for April 28 at 8:30 AM in Room 1150 of the Minnesota Senate Building (Committee on Finance). This bill carries critical implications for healthcare access and funding.

Governor Walz Reaffirms Commitment to Progressive Wins

This week, Governor Walz delivered the State of the State address, recommitting to safeguarding Minnesota’s progressive achievements:

“We’re not walking away from the commitments we’ve made to our schools, to our health care, to green energy, to public safety, to feeding our kids and taking care of our seniors. Just the opposite. This year’s budget protects those ambitious investments by embracing a spirit of responsibility and addressing some long-term budget challenges so that future leaders don’t have to make impossible choices.”

He also emphasized the importance of freedom:

“People want freedom to live their own lives the way they want to live them, even if it’s not the way their neighbors would want to live their lives.”

Governor Walz’s message echoes Pro-Choice Minnesota’s mission: the fight for reproductive freedom is rooted in the belief that everyone deserves the right to live their lives with autonomy, dignity, and self-determination. The ability to make personal decisions about our bodies, families, and futures without interference is fundamental to true freedom — and we will continue working to protect it for all Minnesotans.

Defending Reproductive Freedom and Bodily Autonomy

In a major move to protect bodily autonomy, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison filed a preemptive lawsuit against former President Trump and Attorney General Pam Bondi. The lawsuit seeks to block enforcement of proposed federal actions that would ban transgender athletes from participating in girls' and women’s sports.

As Ellison emphasized:

“Trump’s burning desire to destroy trans kids and punish us for helping them live and thrive isn’t just a violation of law, it’s a violation of Minnesota values. And we're not going to sell out trans kids or any vulnerable community just to stay in the good graces of a lawless administration.”

Trans rights are fundamental to bodily autonomy and full reproductive freedom for all Minnesotans.
