Mission, Vision, Values

A Legacy of Advocacy

Pro-Choice Minnesota, originally founded in 1966 as a state chapter of what would become NARAL Pro-Choice America, was established during a time when abortion was still illegal across most of the United States. Our founders were visionaries—doctors, clergy, parents, and community leaders—who recognized that true freedom and equality are impossible without reproductive autonomy. They stood on the front lines of what was then a radical idea: that people should have the right to make private medical decisions without interference from the government.

For over half a century, we've been a constant presence in the fight for reproductive freedom in Minnesota. From lobbying at the State Capitol and organizing grassroots campaigns, to supporting patients at clinics and advancing judicial protections, our work has helped shape some of the most significant reproductive rights victories in the state.

We have stood firm through shifting political tides—before and after Roe v. Wade, and now beyond it. In moments of triumph and moments of challenge, Pro-Choice Minnesota has remained steadfast, evolving to meet the needs of our communities while holding true to the belief that reproductive rights are human rights.

In October 2022, we embraced a new era by transitioning from our former identity as NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota to an independent organization: Pro-Choice Minnesota. This move reflects our commitment to local leadership, deep community roots, and a future built by and for Minnesotans.

Our legacy is more than our history—it's a living, breathing movement powered by passionate advocates, courageous leaders, and everyday people who believe that everyone should have the freedom to decide what's best for their own body, life, and future.

Pro-Choice Minnesota’s mission is to build collective power to remove barriers, strengthen protections, and expand access to abortion and all reproductive healthcare in Minnesota.

Pro-Choice Minnesota’s vision is reproductive freedom across Minnesota.

Our Values

Bodily Autonomy

We believe that every person has the right to make choices about their body’s reproduction, free from restriction and oppression.

Collective Action

We believe that organizing allies, activating Minnesotan’s who support abortion access, and mobilizing together, is the best way to build the power for change in our political system.

Equity & Intersectionality

We believe that to achieve equal reproductive freedom, we must bring an intersectional approach to our work, our movement, and our society. We must center the voices of those who are most restricted from that freedom along lines of race, gender, sexuality, ability, class, and culture.

Caring Accountability

We support our movement’s growth by holding ourselves accountable to the mistakes of its past and the promise of its future. We recognize the harm that white women in our movement have done to Women of Color and will support each other in addressing and healing that harm.

Supportive Community

We must remember what binds us together and remember how our movement has been divided, especially along lines of race and class. We believe that a supportive community neutralizes the stigma and judgment that people feel about abortion and reproductive health care. We believe that by caring for ourselves and each other we can sustain our critical work and our critical work can sustain us.
