Urge lawmakers to increase Title X funding, cut “abstinence-only” funding, and repeal the global gag rule!
Congress Nears End of Session, Rushes to Finish Budget Bills As Congress returned to work this week, lawmakers acknowledged that they lack the time (and possibly the votes) to complete each of the 11 unfinished appropriations bills this session, and therefore began to craft an FY’08 omnibus spending package – rolling all outstanding appropriations bills into one “must-pass” measure. Three of NARAL Pro-Choice America’s top legislative goals for the year will be resolved in this one massive package: whether to try to repeal the global gag rule, and funding levels for the Title X family-planning program and two of President Bush’s discredited “abstinence-only” programs. Appropriators expect to finalize the omnibus package by early next week. In the meantime, NARAL Pro-Choice America will continue to ask lawmakers to preserve the funding increase for domestic and international family-planning services, to cut funding for “abstinence-only” programs, and to repeal the global gag rule. ü Action Needed: Urge lawmakers to increase Title X funding, cut “abstinence-only” funding, and repeal the global gag rule.
