What is the Canvass?
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” -Margaret Mead Here at NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota, we value our canvass as one of the most effective strategies for grassroots organizing. We are the political leader of the pro-choice movement here in Minnesota and it is our committed citizens that give us the power we need to be a force at the capital. It is our canvass that organizes this great state from top to bottom, helping to ensure we have the political clout we need to win and the resources needed to get there. As anyone can imagine, taking the issue of abortion rights to every city in Minnesota can be quite a task on its own accord, as few issues are as polarizing as a woman’s right to autonomy over her own body. Our canvass is full of thoughtful, committed, passionate individuals, deeply dedicated and fearless; all of the qualities needed to be an activist for choice. We are very proud of the work they do on a daily bases. No matter the weather, the political climate, the dismay that can sometimes be felt when working on an issue that is so crucial to basic human rights, our canvassers show up every day with bells on. It is our canvass that puts the “move” in our movement and cuts through the rhetoric and chaos with one- on- one conversations with everyday citizens, reminding them of their power and ability to facilitate change. A consistent reminder to anyone who may have forgotten that we can never go back to the days before Roe vs. Wade!
