Choose Justice: NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota Opposes Judge Alito
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: October 31, 2005
Anti-Choice Judge Samuel Alito Nominated To Replace Swing Justice Sandra Day O’Connor ST. PAUL, MN— Tim Stanley, Executive Director of NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota, stated that President Bush’s nomination of Judge Samuel Alito to the U.S. Supreme Court demonstrates that the radical right is in charge of judicial selection for this White House.
The nomination of Judge Samuel Alito places the U.S. Supreme Court on the verge of dramatic change, especially in the area of personal privacy and a woman’s right to choose. “In a obvious effort to appease the right-wing of his party, President Bush has thrown down the gauntlet by selecting an outspoken critic of a woman’s right to choose as his nominee to replace the swing seat held by Sandra Day O’Connor,” said Tim Stanley, Executive Director of NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota. “Judge Alito was the lone dissenter in Planned Parenthood of Southern eastern Pennsylvania v. Casey where he voted to uphold Pennsylvania’s spousal notification requirement. By arguing that Pennsylvania women had to notify their husbands prior to obtaining an abortion, Judge Alito is clearly out of America’s mainstream.” Since February, pro-choice organizers have been going door to door in Minnesota communities from urban to suburban to exurban urging constituents to write letters and call Minnesota Senators Coleman and Dayton. The message to the Senators is to only vote to confirm a Supreme Court nominee who will respect established constitutional rights, including the right to personal privacy. With 100,000 Minnesotans already contacted through this effort, NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota’s “Choose Justice” campaign will continue for the duration of President Bush’s term. In addition to door to door work, the “Choose Justice” campaign also includes the following efforts: Online petition directed at Senators Coleman and Dayton at www.SaveTheCourtMN.orgRegular delivery of thousands of letters, postcards and signatures to Sen. Coleman’s office. Weekly rush hour, street-side “visibility” efforts by pro-choice activists. Regular volunteer phone banks to inform and activate pro-choice voters. These efforts will include pro-choice activists, including 500 rapid responders who were recruited specifically to be ready for a Supreme Court vacancy fight. ###Contact Tim Stanley 651-602-7655 (w)
