Choose Justice: Harriet Miers Must Demonstrate Support for Fundamental American Freedoms

Modified: 10/05/2005

State looks to Dayton & Coleman to demand answers from nominee for O’Connor’s swing seat

Saint Paul, MN – NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota, the political arm of the state’s pro-choice movement, reacted quickly to President Bush’s nomination of Harriet Miers to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor. The organization mobilized thousands of pro-choice Minnesotans during the confirmation of John Roberts and expects to increase the level of citizen participation in the Miers nomination process.

“Minnesotans want a Supreme Court justice who respects and protects our fundamental freedoms, including a woman’s right to choose, in the O’Connor tradition,” said Tim Stanley, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota. “The burden is on the Bush Administration and Harriet Miers to prove that she is a moderate who will uphold our health and privacy rights.”

Miers, 60, has little public record; however, she has been a longtime trusted advisor to the president. Stanley continued, “Bush has had many years to learn about Miers’ views. Now, it is incumbent upon Bush and this nominee to share with the American people her views on critical issues, including the right to privacy.”

This session, the Court will hear two cases affecting reproductive rights, one of which could eviscerate the protections of Roe v. Wade. Two-thirds of Americans want to see Roe v. Wade upheld, and whomever is confirmed to replace O’Connor will determine the future of the right to choose.

“With so much at stake for Minnesotans, we look to our Senators, Mark Dayton and Norm Coleman, to show their leadership in protecting the fundamental Constitutional freedoms that we all cherish.”
