Choose Justice: Bush nominates Harriet Miers to succeed Sandra Day O'Connor on the Supreme Court
NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota’s intensive door-to-door campaign to mobilize Minnesotans around protecting the Supreme Court will proceed tonight, albeit under a new reality: John Roberts is now the Chief Justice of the United States and Harriet Miers is the nominee to replace the quintessential swing vote on the Supreme Court, Sandra Day O’Connor. NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota calls on Harriet Miers and the White House to demonstrate to Minnesotans that she shares retiring Justice Sandra Day O’Connor’s commitment to fundamental freedoms, such as the right to privacy as guaranteed by Roe v. Wade. As the Court prepares to hear two cases affecting women’s reproductive rights this fall, Minnesotans do not want President Bush to replace Justice O’Connor with someone who would roll back protections for women’s health and safety. With so much at stake, the burden of proof is on Miers and the Bush administration to provide evidence that she will continue the O’Connor tradition of independence, moderation, and reason.
