Chief Justice Rehnquist Dies

Modified: 09/06/2005

Second Supreme Court Vacancy Invigorates NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota’s “Choose Justice” campaign

ST. PAUL, Minn— Now, with two vacancies on the U.S. Supreme Court to be filled, the Court is poised for a monumental change that will profoundly impact the daily lives of ordinary Americans and effect constitutional interpretation for generations to come.

“With two vacancies on the Court our basic constitutional rights, including the right to personal privacy enshrined in Roe v. Wade are on the table,” said Tim Stanley, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota. “With John Roberts, a lifelong conservative legal activist nominated to replace moderate Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, and another vacancy on the Court due to Chief Justice William Rehnquist’s death, the stakes for our country couldn’t be higher.”

Now, with the announcement of Chief Justice Rehnquist’s death, NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota has ratcheted up its ongoing “Choose Justice” campaign to compel the President to nominate mainstream judges who will respect our constitutional rights.

Since February, pro-choice organizers have been going door to door in communities from urban to suburban to exurban urging pro-choice constituents to write letters and call Minnesota Senators Coleman and Dayton. The message to the Senators is to only vote to confirm a Supreme Court nominee who will respect established constitutional rights, including the right to personal privacy. The “Choose Justice” campaign will continue for the duration of President Bush’s term.
