Roberts Nomination: NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota statement
Statement of NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota Executive Director Tim Stanley "Just as I feared, President Bush nominated a right-wing judicial activist with an anti-choice track record to the Supreme Court: John Roberts. "If Roberts is confirmed to a lifetime appointment, there is little doubt that he will work to overturn Roe v. Wade. As Deputy Solicitor General under the first President Bush, he argued to the Supreme Court that 'Roe was wrongly decided and should be overruled...' "Sixty five percent of Americans wanted President Bush to appoint a nominee who would maintain Roe v. Wade as the law of the land. Minnesota’s pro-choice majority expected the same. "President Bush has consciously chosen the path of confrontation. Our basic constitutional rights, including the right to personal privacy enshrined in Roe v. Wade are on the line. We’re ready for the battle ahead." - - - In light of the Roberts nomination, here is what we’re doing to save the court in Minnesota – The backbone of our campaign to save the court is an on-going door-to-door petition gathering and membership campaign that will knock on over 100,000 doors by next fall – to date we’ve knocked on 50,000 doors. Every night until the end of George Bush’s presidency, pro-choice organizers will be going door to door throughout the Twin Cities urging constituents to write letters and call Minnesota Senators Coleman and Dayton. The message to the Senators is that Minnesotans expect a nominee who will respect established constitutional rights, including the right to personal privacy. Media representatives are invited to accompany organizers on their door-to-door work. The “Choose Justice” campaign also includes the following efforts: New online petition directed at Senators Coleman and Dayton at www.SaveTheCourtMN.org Delivering thousands of already collected letters and signatures to Sen. Coleman’s office. (media representatives invited to accompany delivery) Rush hour, street-side “visibility” efforts by pro-choice activists Volunteer phone banks to inform and activate pro-choice voters Weekly Email messages to our 13,000+ list driving calls and faxes to Sen. Coleman’s office. Volunteer phoners will also call pro-choice voters across Minnesota All of these efforts will include pro-choice activists, including 500 rapid responders who were recruited specifically to be ready for a Supreme Court vacancy fight.
