Justice O’Connor retires

NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota jumps into “Choose Justice” campaign for first Supreme Court vacancy in over decade

ST. PAUL, Minn— With a lifetime appointment to the preside over the highest court of the land on his plate, President Bush has the opportunity to effect constitutional interpretation for generations to come.

Upon the announcement of swing Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota immediately implemented its “Choose Justice” campaign to compel the president to nominate a mainstream judge who will respect our constitutional rights.

Starting tonight, pro-choice organizers will be going door to door in the Twin Cities urging constituents to write letters and call Minnesota Senators Coleman and Dayton. The message to the Senators is to consult with the president and tell him that they expect a nominee who will respect established constitutional rights, including the right to personal privacy. The campaign will continue until a new justice is seated on the Supreme Court.

Media representatives are invited to accompany organizers on their door-to-door work each evening.

The “Choose Justice” campaign also includes the following efforts:

  • New online petition directed at Senators Coleman and Dayton at www.SaveTheCourtMN.org
  • Delivering thousands of already collected letters and signatures to Sen. Coleman’s office. (media representatives invited to accompany delivery)
  • Rush hour, street-side “visibility” efforts by pro-choice activists
  • Volunteer phone banks to inform and activate pro-choice voters
  • Volunteer phoners will also call pro-choice voters in our “adopted states” of North Dakota and South Dakota
  • These efforts will include pro-choice activists, including 400 rapid responders who were recruited specifically to be ready for a Supreme Court vacancy fight.

“This has been the longest period without a Supreme Court vacancy since the 1820s,” said Tim Stanley, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota. “With the moderate O’Connor resigning, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Our basic constitutional rights, including the right to personal privacy enshrined in Roe v. Wade are on the table.”
