Minnesota NARAL Asks If Tim Penny is Pro-Choice
Saint Paul, Minnesota--Minnesota NARAL, an affiliate of the National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League and the state's largest pro-choice grassroots organization, calls on Independence Party gubernatorial candidate Tim Penny to clarify his stance on reproductive freedom. "Tim Penny had a dismal record on a woman's right to choose when he was in Congress, although he has signaled flexibility on the issue more recently," stated Tim Stanley, Executive Director of Minnesota NARAL. Penny’s anti-choice votes include: Voting against the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act, which would establish federal criminal and civil penalties for persons who use force, threat of force, or physical obstruction to interfere with access to abortion services. The bill was proposed after a huge increase in violence by anti-abortion protestors at clinics. Voting against the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 which would require employers to provide up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave for an illness, illness in the family, or to care for a new child. Supporting an amendment to require clinics receiving any federal funds to give parents a 48-hour notice before an abortion is performed on a minor, effectively creating a two-day waiting period. Voting to continue the policy of banning overseas servicewomen from obtaining abortions in military hospitals, even if they pay for the full cost. "The pro-choice community takes pride in convincing former foes the importance of protecting a woman's right to choose and look forward to hearing more from Mr. Penny," said Stanley. "Governor Ventura has been an outstanding advocate for women's reproductive freedom," said Stanley. "We hope the Independence Party candidate this November will continue Ventura's pro-choice advocacy. It is vital that Minnesota has a governor that respects a woman's right to make the decisions that affect her body." Contact: Derek B. Reise 651-602-7655 ###
